WFPB (Whole Foods, Plant-Based Diet): Health Benefits and Disease Prevention
Many have wondered what the benefits of a plant-based diet are. Plant-based diets can provide many health benefits, as well as prevent some diseases, such as cancer.
Eating a plant-based diet means that the majority of your meals are filled with fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and legumes. A plant-based protein such as beans or tofu is also added. Some plant-based diets can also still include a lean meat protein. Protein is usually supposed to make up one-third of the plate of a plant-based diet, while the other two-thirds should be composed of the plant-based foods.
According to the article, “5 benefits of a plant-based diet,” five reasons to eat plant-based foods include:
- They boost your immune system
- They reduce inflammation
- They help you maintain a healthy weight
- They are high in fiber
- They help reduce the risk of cancer and diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and some mental disorders
However, just like any diet, it is important to be mindful of the foods you pick to eat. For instance, frying vegetables and consuming foods that are highly processed that fall into a plant-based food category should be avoided. Frying is not a healthy way to cook vegetables and can affect the health benefits of consuming a plant-based diet, and some highly processed foods are high in fat and sugar and can also affect these benefits.
