June 23rd: Hydration Day

We all know it is crucial to drink plenty of water during the summer in South Texas. This heat is no joke! But, what about during the months where the weather is cooler? Why is staying hydrated so important?

According to the article “The importance of hydration” by Harvard T.H. Chan, School of Public Health, it states that “drinking enough water is important because it helps to regulate our body’s temperature, keeps joints lubricated, prevents infections, delivers nutrients to cells, maintains proper functioning of organs, and also improves sleep quality, cognition, and mood.”

Water is always the best choice to choose when wanting to stay hydrated. Consuming sweetened beverages that can contain high amounts of sugar can harm our health more than help it; however, water that is flavored or sweetened with natural fruits and vegetables is okay. Tea and coffee are also acceptable.

“Experts recommend drinking roughly 11 cups of water per day for the average woman and 16 for men” (Harvard T.H. Chan).
